A treasured part of Vietnam’s cultural heritage, Tục Ngữ Phong Dao is considered a shared golden repository of human wisdom. It is one of the earliest collected compilations of the spiritual and cultural values created by generations of Vietnamese working people and passed down orally over thousands of years, carefully gathered and edited into written form.

This volume is a rich collection of Vietnamese proverbs and folk verses in Vietnamese, preserving the voice, humor, wisdom, and everyday philosophy of the Vietnamese people.

About the scholar
Nguyễn Văn Ngọc (March 1, 1890 - April 26, 1942), also known by the pen name Ôn Như, was one of the important contributors to Vietnamese culture and education in the early 20th century, during the formative years of modern quốc ngữ and its spread through schools.

More than a teacher, civil servant, and educational administrator devoted to teaching, knowledge-building, and the education of younger generations, Nguyễn Văn Ngọc was also deeply committed to preserving, nurturing, and advancing Vietnam’s cultural heritage. Through 18 major works and research projects, mostly written in Vietnamese and compiled through his careful collection, study, and editing, he left a lasting legacy that continues to be remembered by generations of readers. His contributions to the art of Chèo also remain noteworthy.

Học giả Nguyễn Văn Ngọc (01.3.1890-26.4.1942, hiệu Ôn Như) là một trong những người có đóng góp tích cực trong lĩnh vực văn hóa, giáo dục Việt Nam hồi đầu thế kỉ 20, khi quốc ngữ mới ra đời và được quảng bá tại các trường học.

Không chỉ là một người thầy, một công chức, nhà quản lí giáo dục chăm chút cho sự nghiệp giảng dạy, bồi dưỡng kiến thức, đào tạo thế hệ trẻ đương thời; Nguyễn Văn Ngọc còn chuyên tâm với việc bảo tồn, vun đắp, phát triển di sản văn hóa dân tộc. Với 18 công trình và chuyên đề chủ yếu viết bằng tiếng Việt được ông sưu tầm, tra cứu, biên soạn (chưa kể đến những đóng góp với nghệ thuật hát Chèo) tên tuổi Nguyễn Văn Ngọc vẫn luôn được độc giả nhiều thế hệ nhắc nhớ.
