Phố Cổ Hà Nội – Kí Họa Và Hồi Ức brings together drawings created in a variety of artistic materials, alongside reflective writings about Hanoi’s Old Quarter across time. The book explores the area’s cultural heritage, architectural character, historical layers, and the visible impact of urban transformation.

Created with the participation of nearly 60 contributors, including writers, architects, professional and amateur artists from Urban Sketchers Hanoi, this volume is both an art book and a cultural archive. Urban Sketchers Hanoi was awarded the 12th Bùi Xuân Phái Award – For the Love of Hanoi in 2019 for its inspiring work in encouraging the community to explore, create, and preserve the beauty of Hanoi through drawing.

The sketches in this book share a deep affection for “phố Phái,” the poetic and painterly spirit of Hanoi’s old streets. Readers will find familiar names such as Bát Đàn, Cao Thắng, Cổng Đục, Chả Cá, Chân Cầm, Lý Quốc Sư, Chợ Gạo, and Gầm Cầu, each brought to life through images of crowded shopfronts, sidewalk vendors, yellow-painted houses, tangled electric wires, passing motorbikes, and everyday urban rhythms.

The book also captures the striking contrast of Hanoi’s Old Quarter today: thousand-year-old architectural traces standing beside newly built hotels, supermarkets, bars, tattoo shops, and restaurants. Past and present do not sit quietly apart here. They overlap, rub shoulders, and continue to reshape one another in the living fabric of the city.

A special section is dedicated to the communal houses, or đình, within Hanoi’s Old Quarter. These sacred and communal spaces are closely tied to local worship traditions, craft guilds, neighborhood identity, and the rich cultural life of old urban Hanoi. They are presented as precious heritage sites that deserve attention, care, and preservation.

Phố Cổ Hà Nội – Kí Họa Và Hồi Ức tập hợp hơn 200 bức tranh kí hoạ bằng nhiều chất liệu và những bài viết tràn đầy cảm xúc về phố cổ Hà Nội trong dòng chảy thời gian, gắn với những nét đẹp văn hóa, lịch sử và quá trình đô thị hóa. Cuốn sách có sự tham gia của gần 60 tác giả, nhà văn, kiến trúc sư, họa sĩ chuyên và không chuyên đến từ nhóm Kí hoạ đô thị Hà Nội (Urban Sketchers Hanoi) - Nhóm tác giả vừa được trao tặng Giải thưởng “Bùi Xuân Phái - Vì tình yêu Hà Nội lần thứ 12 năm 2019” với các hoạt động truyền cảm hứng mạnh mẽ trong cộng đồng, nhằm khám phá, sáng tác và lưu giữ vẻ đẹp Hà Nội bằng tranh. Những tác phẩm kí hoạ trong Phố Cổ Hà Nội – Kí Họa Và Hồi Ức cùng chung một cảm hứng dành cho "phố Phái". Những phố Bát Đàn, Cao Thắng, Cổng Đục, Chả Cá, Chân Cầm, Lý Quốc Sư, Chợ Gạo, Gầm Cầu... những góc đặc trưng chỉ có ở "phố thị" với bao cửa hàng, cửa hiệu san sát, bày bán cả trên vỉa hè, những ngôi nhà nhỏ với màu sơn vàng quen thuộc và hàng dây điện bắc qua, tấp nập người và xe cộ qua lại. Những công trình kiến trúc đã ngàn năm tuổi, từng dãy nhà cổ kính nằm bên những khách sạn, siêu thị, bar, tattoo shop, nhà hàng... mới xây dựng.
